If you've watched a pack-opening video, scrolled Pokémon TikTok, or seen a card listed for hundreds of pounds with "MHR" next to it, you've likely come across the term "Mega Hyper Rare".
Mega Hyper Rare (MHR) is the newest — and currently rarest — card tier in the Pokémon TCG, sitting above Hyper Rare at the very top of the modern rarity ladder. It was introduced with the Mega Evolution set in September 2025 and is exclusive to Mega Pokémon ex cards.
This guide shares what a Pokémon Mega Hyper Rare is, average pull rates for modern sets, and how much they’re worth.
What is a Pokémon “Mega Hyper Rare” card?
A Mega Hyper Rare (MHR) is a Pokémon TCG chase card exclusive to the Mega Evolution era, featuring a Mega Pokémon ex in full monochrome gold foil. Introduced in September 2025, it sits above Hyper Rare as the rarest tier in the game, with pull rates as steep as 1 in 1,260 packs.
MHRs are identified by a distinct gold rarity symbol in the bottom corner. They’re much harder to pull than any other rarity in the game — often 1 in several hundred to 1,000 packs.
Mega Hyper Rares, also known as “gold cards”.
How to identify a Pokémon Mega Hyper Rare
If you've pulled a shiny gold card and you're not sure whether it's an MHR, check:
The finish. Is the entire card — background, border and artwork — rendered in a single gold monochrome tone? MHRs don't use the multicoloured rainbow foil of a standard Hyper Rare.
The Pokémon. MHRs only feature Mega Pokémon ex. Check the card name for "Mega [Pokémon] ex".
The symbol. Look at the bottom corner for the gold rarity marker used for this tier. It's visually distinct from the three-star Hyper Rare symbol and only appears in Mega Evolution-era sets.
The set. MHRs don't exist outside the Mega Evolution block. You won't find one in a mainline Scarlet & Violet set.
Pokémon Mega Hyper Rare Pull Rates
Pull rates for Pokémon Mega Hyper Rare cards average about 1 in 1,260 packs. They’re one of the rarest card types.
Our Pokémon Pull Rate Calculator shows the odds of pulling a specific MHR card. For example:

Mega Hyper Rare in Pokémon TCG: FAQ
What does MHR stand for in Pokémon cards?
MHR stands for Mega Hyper Rare, a rarity tier introduced with the Mega Evolution set in September 2025. It sits above Hyper Rare and is reserved exclusively for Mega Pokémon ex cards.
Is a Mega Hyper Rare rarer than a Special Illustration Rare?
Yes. A Mega Hyper Rare pulls far less often than a Special Illustration Rare — sometimes by a factor of ten or more — making it the hardest card type to pull by chance in current sets.
Can you get a Mega Hyper Rare outside the Mega Evolution sets?
No. Mega Hyper Rares are exclusive to the Mega Evolution era and won't appear in mainline Scarlet & Violet sets, which use Hyper Rare as their top gold-foil tier instead.
Are Mega Hyper Rares the same as Gold cards?
Mega Hyper Rares are commonly described as gold Pokémon cards because of their distinctive gold artwork and borders. However, “gold card” is a broad collector term, while Mega Hyper Rare refers to the specific rarity classification used by the Pokémon TCG.
What are the most valuable Mega Hyper Rare Pokémon cards?
The most valuable Mega Hyper Rares feature especially popular Pokémon such as Charizard, Dragonite, Lucario and Gardevoir. The Mega Charizard Y ex from Ascended Heroes, for example, is currently selling for $358 raw and $2,175 in PSA 10.
How can I tell if a Mega Hyper Rare is a fake card?
Check the card's printing quality, font, colors, texture, borders, holographic pattern and dimensions against a verified authentic copy. Suspiciously cheap cards and sellers with poor reputations are additional warning signs. For an expensive purchase, authentication or professional grading provides additional reassurance.
